Caterpillar Energy Solutions approved Q8 Mahler GR8 as gas engine oil for the use in MWM TCG and Caterpillar CG gas engines with increased pollutant concentration. The approval was the outcome of extensive field tests in Germany, where the engine condition proved to be outstanding while showing excellent results on oil consumption and filter life.
Gasses with an increased pollutant concentration, such as bio– or landfill gas, create extreme operating conditions for gas engines. The high acid concentration and the increased oxidation tendency call for specific lubricants such as the Q8 Mahler GR-range.
Clean technology
The engine oils of the Q8 Mahler GR-series are developed to excel in challenging, highly contaminated environments. Thanks to the ‘clean technology’ these lubricants offer many benefits in terms of oxidation and deposit control and Total Base Number (TBN- retention). The Q8 Mahler GR-range keeps engines clean and avoids lacquering. This results in a lower oil consumption and an extended engine life.

Field test proves lower oil consumption
Caterpillar tested the Q8 Mahler GR8 in a gas engine (TCG 2016 V12 C) on a site in Germany. This field test showed excellent results on motor cleanliness. The pictures below show only few deposits on piston ring grooves and significantly less lacquering on important engine parts, like the liner.
Less lacquering and few deposits with Q8 Mahler GR8
With an oil drain interval of more than 4.000 hours and clean engine parts, the oil consumption of the installation was significantly lower as expected.
Caterpillar Approval
Following the positive results of the field test in Germany, Caterpillar Energy Solutions approved Q8 Mahler GR8 as gas engine oil for the use in MWM TCG and Caterpillar CG gas engines with increased pollutant concentration. Caterpillar will include these Q8Oils’s products in the next edition of their technical circular TR2105 – Specification for Lubricating Oil.
