The major challenges for gas and steam turbine oils is viscosity, oxidation and thermal stability. The Q8 Volta high performance turbine oils are based on Group III base fluids, delivering excellent wear protection and oxidation stability. These products have received an impressive list of OEM approvals and are first choice for many gas and steam turbines owners.

Oil viscosity vs. temperature

Viscosity is one of the key considerations when it comes to selecting the right oil for your gas or steam turbine circulation systems. Viscosity has an influence on the equipment wear rate, energy consumption and a range of other factors. When comparing different turbine oils you must not only compare the ISO Viscosity Grade, but also the Viscosity Index.

As temperature rises, oil viscosity decreases and vice versa. The Viscosity Index (VI) measures the change in viscosity relative to the temperature. The higher the VI, the more stable the oil viscosity. Various tests have proved that the Q8 Volta oils has a significantly higher VI compared to its competitors. As a result this oil keeps its pumpability at low temperatures and provides sufficient film strength even at high temperatures.

Oxidation and thermal stability

The high operating temperatures in large gas turbine circulation systems is the leading cause of premature turbine oil failure due to oxidation. As a response gas turbine OEM’s have increased their specified TOST limits to meet the higher operating temperatures up to 120 °C. Tests have proved that the Q8 Volta oils show an extended oil life, exceeding 10.000 hours in the Turbine Oil Oxidation Stability test (TOST). Together with the resistance of deposit formation and an outstanding sludge control, this makes the Q8 Volta range an excellent turbine oil for new combined cycle turbine technology as well as existing turbine plants.

OEM approvals

The unique combination of excellent oxidation and thermal stability, together with the resistance of deposit formation and an outstanding sludge control, makes the Q8 Volta range an excellent turbine oil for new combined cycle turbine technology as well as existing turbine plants. No wonder these products have been approved by all major steam and gas turbine manufacturers.

The Q8 Volta range of turbine oils received OEM approvals for:

  • MAN Turbo SPD 10000494596
  • Alstom Power HTGD 90117
  • Siemens TLV 9013 04
  • Siemens TLV 9013 05
  • GE Energy GEK 32568
  • GE Energy GEK 107395
